Remember the pre-reqs for Soc 4966W are enforced! C- or higher in Soc 1001, 3701, 3801, 3811, and at least 4 out of the 5 Soc electives before enrolling in the course.

Join the UMN Libraries and Minnesota Transform for a movie night highlighting the power of youth in the Civil Rights Movement. Guests will watch “The Children’s March of 1963,” followed by a guided discussion. The film and discussion aim to empower youth and people of all ages to be the change they wish to see in the world, even though the path is not always easy. Pizza will be served!

Mentoring  Conference: Fostering Diverse Communities of Mentorship – Evidence-Based Practices for Reciprocal Growth 

The Mentoring Institute at UNM is pleased to announce its 15th Annual Mentoring Conference, Fostering Diverse Communities of Mentorship: Evidence-Based Practices for Reciprocal Growth

We invite faculty, staff, and students of higher education, researchers, K-12 educators, community leaders, administrators, non-profit partners, government agencies, and other professionals to participate in this five-day event, which will be held from Monday, October 24th, 2022, through Friday, October 28nd, 2022, at The University of New Mexico’s Student Union Building in Albuquerque, New Mexico*.

Together, we will develop dynamic conversations and networking opportunities through hands-on workshops, individual/panel presentations, and plenary sessions. We aim to foster engagement among scholars and professionals in the fields of mentoring, coaching, and leadership.

Public Health Association Conference  

This year’s conference focuses on the shared challenges and opportunities in health equity, environmental health and justice, and workforce development. With breakout sessions highlighting work done in Minnesota on these topics and inspiring plenary speakers, conference attendees will leave with new ideas and strategies to use in their communities. Please visit the 2022 conference website for additional details.

The MPHA conference covers a range of current public health topics that students are interested in such as health equity. For students, the conference provides an opportunity for career exploration through hearing speakers from diverse sectors of public health and networking with public health professionals who can potentially provide internships or informational interviews. Students can also learn more about the Association, which has several ways for students to be engaged including student roles on the Governing Council and committee projects.

St. Croix Regional Medical Center is seeking a Marketing Intern to work 32-40 hours per week during the summer. There will be an opportunity to continue working a part-time schedule when school resumes for up to 12 months. This role will work on-site at our St Croix Falls, WI location. The Marketing Intern will have administrative duties including developing and implementing marketing strategies. CLA Student Service Peer Advisor 

The College of Liberal Arts (CLA) Student Services office provides direct service to students as a key information, intake, peer advising, and referral office for all CLA undergraduate students. In this role, the CLA Student Services office located in Johnston Hall (or remote), serves as a pivotal outreach and communication arm of CLA Student Services (CLASS) for students, faculty, staff, the university community, and the general public. Functionally, the CLASS team operates as the “front door” of the College for the majority of our incoming first-year and transfer students. Our team also supports CLA advising by assisting students with basic advising decisions and referrals to professional advising staff. The CLASS office staff coordinate registration and orientation operations for the college, maintain student records, and provide mail and equipment services to CLASS. The CLASS office staff provide critical central support and communications for advising functions throughout CLASS, including the student advising communities, the Martin Luther King, Jr. Program, Individualized Degree Programs and the First and Second Year Experience program. Students served are continuing CLA students with special emphasis on newly admitted students.

Recruiting Welcome Week Leader 

What is a Welcome Week?

Welcome Week is a six-day program directly before fall semester and focuses on providing a quality transitional experience for new students and helps them prepare for their life at the University of Minnesota through planning, exploring campus, building community, and participating in campus traditions. Welcome Week 2022 will take place Wednesday, August 31 – Monday, September 5.

What are Welcome Week Leaders (WWLs)?

Welcome Week Leaders are a team of volunteers who help to create a welcoming and inclusive environment during Welcome Week by leading a small group of 20-25 new students. WWLs are trained to facilitate small group activities and conversations. All students are encouraged to apply to be Welcome Week Leaders!

WWL Benefits

UMN Scholarship in Honor of George Floyd 

The University of Minnesota Scholarship in Honor of George Floyd is now accepting applications from all eligible students, including those with financial need and those who have been victims of police violence. Candidates are eligible to be considered for this scholarship if they are currently registered full-time in an undergraduate degree-seeking program at the University of Minnesota Twin Cities.

The scholarship application is available at the UMTC Undergraduate Scholarship Search site. Click ‘Let’s Begin’ and find the link for the University of Minnesota Scholarship in Honor of George Floyd.  It will include detailed information about the scholarship program and the application process. The award amount is expected to be approximately $4,000 for two UMTC students split evenly between the fall 2022 and spring 2023 semesters.

To the maximum extent possible, preference will be given to students who will enhance the diversity of the student body as described by the University. In evaluating student body diversity, after the eligible pool of candidates is selected, an additional consideration will be given to Black or African American students if they are underrepresented in the University. For the current term, spring 2022, Black or African American students are underrepresented at the University.

Undergraduate Fellowships/Awards in Human Rights 

Fellowship 

The Don and Arvonne Fraser Fellowships offer $3,500 in funding to support placement of two UMN -Twin Cities undergraduate students in leading human rights organizations for summer 2022. The Don Fraser Fellow will work with The Advocates for Human Rights and the Arvonne Fraser Fellow will be placed with Global Rights for Women

Award 

This spring we offer the 11th Annual Inna Meiman Human Rights Award and the Sullivan Ballou Award recognizing UMN – Twin Cities undergraduate students who have demonstrated a deep personal commitment to the promotion and protection of human rights. Each award comes with a $1,000 payment and recognition at an April 29th Awards program. We welcome nominations by faculty, staff and peers as well as self-nominations, with a letter of support.

Eiger Presidential Fellows Program 

“Are you interested in conducting research on the American Presidency, Congress, or the national policy making process?  Would you like to work with a professional mentor and network with political leaders in Washington, D.C.?  Then you should apply for the Eiger Presidential Fellows Program offered by the Center for the Study of the Presidency and Congress.  This is a one-year non-resident program through which you are matched with a mentor, write a 10-15 page research paper while completing your regular on-campus classes, and then travel to Washington, D.C., during the spring semester for a leadership conference and networking opportunities.
