- Considering graduate school or taking graduate-level classes for fall 2022? Virtual Bridge to the Doctorate Workshop – Building and Sustaining Dynamic Communities of Support
- Date: Wednesday, April 20, 2022, 3:30 to 5:00 p.m. (CST)
- RSVP & Zoom Link: https://z.umn.edu/Register-Bridge-to-Doctorate
- Hosted by: The University of Minnesota’s Louis Stokes NorthStar STEM Alliance and TRIO Ronald E. McNair Scholars Program.
Are you a first-generation college student, Pell-eligible and/or from an underrepresented community seeking a pathway to transform systems? Have you ever thought about pursuing a doctorate degree or going to graduate school?
This workshop will provide resources and tips around identifying and creating dynamic communities of support as you pursue research opportunities and graduate school. Specifically, developing and sustaining relationships with faculty is an important part of the process. COVID-19 provided an array of challenges, including instances of not feeling as comfortable connecting with faculty.
Participants will gain insight on strategies to reach out to faculty and maximize those relationships. Panelists will include faculty and student perspectives.
Science Court: Join our Jury
As you may know, part of the Science Court class — our scientific mock trial course — is a jury trial at the end of the semester where students will argue both sides of the controversial issue they’ve been studying.
This year students are looking into the efficacy of the A through F grading system and potential alternatives. What could or should the University change to help measure learning, while alleviating student mental health concerns? What effect might a change have on GPAs, graduate school applications and job prospects? Many fascinating ideas have been raised in class, and we’re excited to share them!
If that topic sounds interesting to you, we encourage you to consider becoming a juror at our trial on April 23. Filling out the form at the link is simply an indication of interest, not a commitment! Although the trial will be in-person, we will allow jurors to join us remotely if that’s your preference.
It is imperative that the students have a diverse jury to hear their ideas, so no matter your opinion or background on the matter, we encourage you to join us. If you think someone else in your life might find this interesting, please share!
If becoming a juror isn’t something you can commit to, please consider joining us on Tuesday evening at 5:30 (Mechanical Engineering 102) for a short town hall event — join in person or remotely (Zoom details to come) — to hear a preview of the research the students have found and discuss it.
Future Legal Professionals
Join us next Wednesday, April 13th at 5:30pm for a virtual networking event, Future Legal Professionals! This is a great opportunity to speak to a variety of professionals who work in the legal field–we have several attorneys, and individuals that work in non-attorney roles in legal settings, a diplomat from the State Department, and many more who are attending to share their experiences with current students. Please register prior to the event using this Google form: z.umn.edu/FLP22
