CEA Program Information Sessions

We wanted to extend an invitation to join our upcoming CEA Program Information Sessions (Online) with your students where they can explore exciting opportunities and learn more about the Certificate of Election Administration Program (CEA) Program. 

NextGenPop Undergraduate Program in population research

NextGenPop is an undergraduate program in population research that aims to increase the diversity of the population field and nurture the next generation of population scholars. The program includes a 2-week, in-person, on-campus summer experience and subsequent virtual components focused on research and professional development. This summer 2024, 20 undergraduate students will be hosted by the Duke University Population Research Institute in Durham, NC, June 2 – 15. Participants receive a $1,000 stipend as well as funds to cover travel and living expenses. Classroom instruction and hands-on applications address contemporary social and policy issues in population research, including race and income inequalities, health disparities, immigration, and family change. Get your Research Published with MURAJ!

The Minnesota Undergraduate Research and Academic Journal (MURAJ) is requesting undergraduate scholars to submit their research work to be included in our 2024 publication! Our peer-reviewed journal accepts submissions from all disciplines. You are eligible to submit your scholarship to MURAJ as long as you are currently an undergraduate student and you are listed as the first author of the manuscript. The deadline to submit your manuscript is January 15th, 2024. If you have any questions, please contact muraj@umn.edu.

Undergraduate Fellowship in Human Rights

The Human Rights Program (HRP) is pleased to announce the inaugural Hrant Dink Memorial Fellowship for Spring 2024 (January 16 – April 29). Open to undergraduate students with a commitment to human rights, the Hrant Dink Memorial Fellow will work with the Director of HRP to expand the program’s capacity to respond to mass atrocity crimes. The fellow will assist the Director in monitoring and responding to urgent and emergent human rights emergencies including the commission of mass atrocity crimes. The fellow will be tasked with monitoring Human Rights Organization reports and early warning systems, direct program attention to urgent crises, and collaborate with the Director to coordinate an appropriate response including, but not limited to, coordinating events, speakers, statements, fact sheets, or policy and advocacy actions. Hrant Dink was an Armenian Turkish journalist known for advocating for Turkish-Armenian reconciliation and human and minority rights in Turkey who was assassinated in 2007. 

Undergraduate students who wish to apply for the position must complete the online application and submit a cover letter and resume (through the application link) to Carrie Walling, Director of the Human Rights Program by December 8.

ARTH 3022: Impressionism in Paris 1874 to Today

There is a new study-abroad seminar being offered in the Spring. This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to learn about Impressionism in the city where it first emerged 150 years ago. You have the opportunity to study artworks presented in Paris and learned from an experienced program leader, internationally recognized for her research and teaching on the subject.

The course is 3 credits and counts as a Arts/Humanities Liberal Education Requirement. The course starts on March 11th, 2023. The Paris trip is scheduled for May 12th-23rd, 2023.

Taking the Capstone in Spring 2024?

If you’re planning on taking the capstone next semester, you should have gotten your permission number and registered already!  If this is news to you, please write to us at socadvis@umn.edu

The pre-reqs for the Capstone are a C- or higher in Soc 1001, 3701, 3801, 3811, and at least 4 of the Soc electives completed, for either the BA or BS version of our programs.

Professor Joachim Savelsberg has been named the recipient of the 2023 Distinguished Scholar Award, Division of Historical Criminology, American Society of Criminology.
