GEOG 5900: Advanced Spatial Analysis

Instructor: Dr. Di Zhu

E-mail: dizhu@umn.edu

  • BS majors this could be a course for your sub-plan.  Please connect with Bobby for further details

Course description: “What happens north, south, east, or west of you is very likely to be dependent on what is happening here”. The uniqueness of geospatial problems requires specialized theories and methods to tackle with. Spatial analysis provides both qualitative and quantitative tools to understand complex spatial effects and to support geographic knowledge discover. In this course, we will dive into several advanced topics in the field of numerical spatial analysis, ranging from local spatial statistics, spatial classification and clustering, geostatistical modeling, to geographically weighted regression. Through six structured topic modules and a case study project, students will have more in-depth understanding towards key principles such as spatial dependence, local versus global, distance decay, scale, and spatial heterogeneity. To sum, this is an advanced course of spatial analysis and modeling that makes uses of specialized linear algebra, statistical modeling, and computational skills for geospatial data science.
