Essay Writing Workshop

This scholarship essay writing workshop will help students learn how to craft high-quality Gilman and/or Freeman-ASIA Scholarship essays. We will provide individual feedback in addition to general writing tips. If students wish to receive individual feedback, they should email a draft of their essay by February 17to email@example.com and bring a printed draft to the session for individual feedback
Students may apply for both scholarships if they meet the eligibility criteria of both.
Gilman Application deadline: Tuesday, March 7 (summer and fall semester)
Freeman-ASIA Application deadline: Wednesday, March 1 (for summer) and Tuesday, April 4 (fall semester)
The Gilman International Scholarship Program offers grants for US citizen undergraduate students of limited financial means to pursue academic studies or credit-bearing, career-oriented internships abroad. Applicants must be Pell Grant-eligible (check eFAAN to confirm) US citizens who are studying abroad for at least 4 weeks. Awards up to $8,000 are available for summer, semester, and year programs.
The Freeman-ASIA Scholarship Program provides scholarships for US citizen and permanent resident undergraduate students with demonstrated financial need to study abroad in east or southeast Asia. Applicants must be studying abroad for at least 8 weeks. Awards up to $7,000 are available for summer, semester, and year programs.
Nearly 30% of students who apply for a Gilman or Freeman-ASIA scholarship win (average award $3,000-$3,500), and last year 15 UofM students won an award. Last semester, 50% of UMTC Gilman applicants were selected to receive an award.
