Oct 9th-13th has been named National Transfer Student Week by the National Institute for the Study of Transfer Students!

How are we Celebrating our Transfer Students?
  • In order to celebrate and acknowledge all of the contributions transfer students make to our campus,  U of M maroon and gold “Transfer” computer stickers will be delivered to the Student Services/advising offices for staff to use and to give to the transfer students you encounter. Please keep an eye out for these and disseminate! Let me know if you need more.
  • In addition, OFYP and OUE are collaborating on a social media campaign aimed at our students. We will be asking them to share their stories on the U of M Transfer Student Facebook Page and other social media accounts using the hashtag #UMNtransfers.

Transfer Student Facts

I also wanted to share a few quick facts about our transfer students and the resources available to transfers on our campus.
  • On average, 30% of our incoming student class every fall are transfer students (this is somewhere between 2,110-,2300 students, depending on the year).
  • Approximately 39% of our transfer students are first-generation college students.
  • Approximately 33% transfer from a MNSCU 2-year school.
  • 16% of incoming transfers are international students (compared to 6% of our freshmen class).
  • Transfer students are excited to take advantage of all the resources the U of M has to offer:
    • 55% of incoming transfer students state they intend to pursue a research project while at the U of M.
    • 71% of incoming transfers plan to pursue an internship while at the U of M.
    • 64% of incoming transfers plan to get involved in a U of M student organization.
(This info was taken from the Office of Undergraduate Education Transfer Student Profile and the OFYP pre-orientation Tell Us About Yourself survey, given to all incoming transfer students)
Transfer Student Resources:
In addition to all of the great work being done to support our transfers in the colleges/ student support units across campus, I wanted to remind you of the central resources we have for our current transfer students, including:
As always, there is also the Google Group  UMNTC Transfer Student Experience. A  forum for U of M faculty and staff to discuss issues and resources related to transfer students.

Student Parent HELP Center

Students with children are an often invisible and ignored population of students on college campuses nation wide. Historically under-represented and under-served, student parent numbers have rapidly increased across higher education in recent years.
The Student Parent HELP Center has been serving students with children on our campus for decades and longer than any other program in the US.
In honor of our 50th anniversary, please join us on October 16th for an informative, in-depth discussion on college access and success for low income students with children, featuring Reps Ilhan Omar and Rena Moran.
This will not only be informative for all staff and faculty but due to the social justice and policy issues addressed, would also make an excellent event for any student or class activity. Full details provided in the link below. This is a FREE but ticketed event and registration is required.
